Plan Basics

Who is required to purchase a VCU Dining Plan?

All VCU students residing in nine-month dormitory-style residence halls are required to purchase one of five (5) Essential Dining Plans. The following residence halls require a plan purchase:

Brandt,

GRC III,

Honors College,

Johnson,

Rhoads, and

Cabaniss.

When selecting a residence hall, please be mindful of any special dietary needs you have, as the residence halls listed above require a Dining Plan.

What are Swipes?

Swipes are essentially meals, which are used primarily at Market 810 and Jonah’s - a culinary emporium, or to purchase a meal combo through the Meal Exchange program at participating retail locations. Swipes do not carry between semesters.

What are Dining Dollars?

Dining Dollars work like a pre-paid debit card, allowing you to make tax-free food purchases at all VCU dining locations. Dining Dollars purchase food at the posted prices at a dollar-for-dollar ratio. The current tax rate on meals in Richmond is 11.5%, which means you will save 11.5% on each food purchase.

Additional Dining Dollars can be added to any existing plan Dining Dollars (in $25 increments) at any time during the semester with a credit/debit card:
On-line at www.bsv.vcu.edu/dining
In person at 1111 West Broad Street, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or
By calling 804.828.1148

Dining Dollars cannot be billed through the VCU Department of Student Accounting.

What is the Meal Exchange Program?

The Meal Exchange program allows guests with a Dining Plan to use Swipes to purchase meal combos at designated VCU Dining Services retail locations.

How can I purchase a VCU Dining Plan?

A Dining Plan can be purchased on-line at www.bsv.vcu.edu/dining or in-person by visiting the VCU Dining Services office at 1111 W. Broad Street. Students will be billed through the VCU Department of Student Accounting. Once the semester begins, it ordinarily takes two (2) business days for the purchased plan to appear on the Student Account. To check your account, visit: https://my.vcu.edu/.

Students living in residence halls requiring a dining plan (see Plan Basics 1) who have not selected an Essential Dining Plan by mid July will automatically be assigned the default 200 Swipe + 300 Dining Dollars Plan. (This assigned plan can be changed up until Friday, September 9, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. for the fall and Friday, January 27, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. for the spring.)

Do I have to purchase my Dining Plan by a particular time?

No, Dining Plans maybe be purchased at any time during the semester.

How soon can I use my Dining Plan?

Plans can be used as soon as they are loaded onto your VCUCard, as long as they’re in the appropriate dates for the semester. In some instances, this may take as long as one business day, but in most instances the plan will be available within 4 hours of registration. Plan benefits are available regardless of the status of your Student Account or Financial Aid.

How do I know if I have a Dining Plan?

There are multiple ways to confirm your dining plan.
Use the student portal: https://my.vcu.edu/
Check your balance through VCUCard: vcucard.vcu.edu
Finally, check your VCU Student Account, also accessed through the student portal: https://my.vcu.edu/

What if I use my entire Dining Plan before the end of the semester?

You can purchase multiple dining plans in a semester, as long as your Student Account is in good standing with the University.

How do I purchase an additional Dining Plan?

Simply call our office Monday – Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 804-828-1148. The online system doesn’t allow for multiple plan purchases to ensure you are not double billed. Additionally, by talking with us, we can make sure that adding another dining plan is the best solution based on the proximity to the semester’s end. Because these are legally binding contracts, a phone-call is acceptable only for additional Dining Plan purchases.
